Understanding DTAC

What is DTAC?

The Digital Technology Assessment Criteria (DTAC) is NHS England's minimum assurance framework, used by NHS organisations when assessing digital health technologies before procurement and deployment. Rather than focusing on features, DTAC looks at whether your product is safe, secure, accessible and ready for NHS use.

Every NHS buyer will expect evidence across five areas.

Clinical Safety
Data Protection
Technical Assurance
Interoperability
Usability & Accessibility

Why complete this now? Preparing your evidence before procurement can significantly reduce delays. Organisations that prepare early generally progress through procurement more efficiently, because the supporting evidence already exists.

Updated for 2026. This assessment has been aligned to the refreshed NHS England DTAC introduced in April 2026. The updated framework:
  • reduces duplication;
  • aligns more closely with the DSP Toolkit;
  • aligns with the Pre-Acquisition Questionnaire (PAQ).
Always refer to the latest NHS England guidance when preparing your submission.
